The School House and The Archdale Hall

School House- - The Hall-exterior - - The Hall-interior - - The Library

York House School was founded in 1910 by the Reverend C.V.Hawkins in a house in Hampstead. After several moves as the school's numbers grew, the school moved to Moneyhill House, Rickmansworth in 1939. In 1966 York House finally moved into this magnificent building at Redheath, built in 1712 by Charles Finch and reputed to be one of the last works of Sir Christopher Wren. The Redheath Estate was formerly owned by Lord & Lady Poole. This hall, shown in the second and third pictures, is a recent addition to the school. It is named after a former Headmaster, and was formally opened in November 1997. It is a dual purpose building - being a fully equipped sports hall, of dimensions greater than two badminton courts, and also housing a fully equipped permanent stage for school productions and concerts. The smaller building attached on the right of the hall is the new library - the fourth picture shows the interior.

The New Pre-Prep Block

Pre-Prep - - Pre-Prep Pre-Prep- - Pre-Prep - -

This new building was opened in Autumn 2001 to house both the Kindergarten children and the Pre-Prep boys. It has nine classrooms with ensuite toilet facilities, a cloakroom/changing room, a staffroom, staff offices, storage rooms, and and a medical room. Three classrooms are used by the Kindergarten children and six (two per year group) by the Pre-Prep boys. The first two photographs show the front of the building and the other two show the opening ceremony led by the Headmaster, Mr Moore, and the Head of Pre-Prep, Mrs Grant. In Archive 2001 you can see a series of photographs of its construction.

The Swimming Pool

The Pool-2- - The Pool-1

This heated indoor pool was opened in 1987. This enables swimming to be one of our school's major sports and we have a successful swimming squad. It is also used for training sessions by the school's Canoe Club and by the Parents' Association Swimming Club.

Classroom Activities

Kindergarten- - Juniors - - French Room - - Geography Room

The first picture shows the Kindergarten children and the second picture shows a junior group - boys up to age 8+ years are generally taught in their own rooms by experienced class teachers. The third and fourth pictures show French and Geography lessons - the older boys are taught in subject rooms by specialist subject teachers. The effort and enthusiasm are plain to see!

Special Facilities

Music Room- - Science Lab - - IT Room - - Art Room

The Music Suite comprises a Music Room equipped with electronic keyboards as well as a range of instruments; there are also several sound-proof practice rooms - the boys are able to learn to play musical instruments with lessons taken by the Director of Music or by one of the many visiting peripatetic teachers. The well-equipped laboratory is used enthusiastically by the boys from age 8+ years for all their science lessons and practical investigative work. Many of the classrooms have their own computers but we also have a new Computer Suite equipped with networked Multimedia PCs, LCD monitors and broadband Internet. This is used for class teaching of Information Technology skills in addition to its use across the curriculum in other lessons and also by the popular Computer Club. The fourth picture shows one of the boys completing his masterpiece in the Art Room.

The School Grounds

Rugby Match- - Cricket Match - -Tennis - - KG Playground

The extensive school grounds give the children a wonderful environment for sport and play. The first two pictures were taken during matches against other local prep schools - the grounds extend to the trees in the distance beyond the fence. We have two soccer and rugby fields, two cricket squares, all-weather surface cricket nets, tennis courts, and extensive, well-equipped playgrounds.

School Productions

School Play-1- - School Play-2 - - School Play-3 - - School Play-4

These pictures show scenes from a recent school production of "Adventures in Wonderland", performed by boys from Forms 5 to 8 (9 to 13 year-olds). Big productions such as this involve much hard work by boys, parents and staff. Children from the Kindergarten upwards take part in plays and concerts throughout the school year.

The Spring Daffodils

Daffodils

This carpet of daffodils adorns the long drive from the main gate to the school buildings every spring - a magnificent sight to inspire every budding Wordsworth!
